Got Questions?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything grocery store owners need to know about our shelving, slatwall, and fixture solutions.

What is gondola shelving and why do grocery stores use it?+
Gondola shelving is a freestanding retail display system with adjustable shelves on one or both sides. It's the industry standard for grocery stores because it's durable, modular, and maximizes aisle space. Wall gondolas line the perimeter; double-sided gondolas create aisle runs through the floor. Both are adjustable so you can reconfigure your layout as your product mix changes.
What's the difference between wall gondola and double-sided gondola?+
Wall gondola sits against a wall with one-sided product display — ideal for perimeter walls and store edges. Double-sided gondola stands freestanding in the middle of your floor with product display on both sides — used to create aisles. Most grocery store layouts use both together.
What gondola shelving sizes do you carry?+
Standard heights are 48", 54", 60", 72", and 84". Standard widths are 36" and 48". End cap units are also available to cap the ends of aisle runs and add high-visibility merchandising space. Call 1-800-292-5227 for help sizing out your layout.
How much weight can gondola shelving hold?+
Our gondola shelving is built from heavy-duty steel and typically supports 200–400 lbs per shelf when properly installed. Grocery and supermarket applications — canned goods, bottled beverages, bulk items — are exactly what these units are designed for.
What slatwall sizes and colors are available?+
Standard slatwall panels are 4'×8' (48"×96") and 4'×4', ¾" thick MDF. Available in 13+ colors and finishes including white, black (gloss and matte), gray, maple, cherry, barnwood, sonoma oak, raw MDF paintable, and more. Aluminum inserts are available to increase load capacity to 100 lbs per groove.
Do you offer bulk pricing discounts?+
Yes — bulk discounts are available for gondola shelving and slatwall orders. The more you order, the better the pricing. Fill out our bulk pricing form or call 1-800-292-5227 and we'll put together a custom quote for your store.
Do you ship assembled or do I have to put it together?+
Both options are available. Standard shipping includes boxed components, protective crating, and assembly instructions. Assembled delivery means we build every unit, palletize, and crate it — arrives ready to place. Assembled delivery costs more to ship but saves you significant labor time on-site.
What if something arrives damaged?+
We handle it entirely. Photograph the damage, note it on the delivery receipt, and send us the photos. We file the freight claim and ship replacements at no cost to you. This is part of why we crate every order — but in the rare event something gets through, we make it right.
What is gondola shelving?+
Gondola shelving is a freestanding retail display system with adjustable shelves on one or both sides. It is the industry standard for grocery, convenience, and supermarket environments — built to handle heavy product loads and constant daily use.
What's the difference between wall and double-sided gondola?+
Wall gondola sits against a wall with display on one side. Double-sided gondola stands freestanding in aisle runs with display on both sides. Most grocery layouts use wall gondola on the perimeter and double-sided gondola to build aisle rows through the floor.
What heights and widths are available?+
Available heights: 48", 54", 60", 72", and 84". Standard widths: 36" and 48". End cap units are also available. Call us for help planning a floor layout that fits your store dimensions.
What are gondola end caps?+
End cap units cap the ends of a gondola aisle run, creating additional display space at high-traffic spots near main walkways. They're great for seasonal promotions, featured products, and impulse buys in grocery environments.
What material is gondola shelving made from?+
Heavy-duty steel with a powder coat finish. Built for the demands of commercial retail — resists rust, handles heavy product loads, and holds up to daily restocking activity in high-traffic grocery environments.
Can gondola shelving be reconfigured later?+
Yes — shelves are fully adjustable. You can reposition shelf heights, change the backing panels, or rearrange entire gondola runs as your store layout evolves. The modular design is built for flexibility.
What are standard slatwall panel dimensions?+
Standard panels are 4'×8' (48"×96"), ¾" thick. 4'×4' panels are also available. The 4'×8' panel covers more wall per install but requires two people; the 4'×4' (about 45 lbs) can be handled solo.
What is slat spacing — 3-inch vs 6-inch?+
3-inch spacing is the most common — more grooves means more flexibility for hook and accessory placement. 6-inch spacing has a cleaner, shiplap-style look with less visual busyness. Both use the same accessories interchangeably.
How much weight can slatwall hold?+
30 lbs per groove without aluminum inserts. With aluminum inserts installed: up to 100 lbs per groove. For heavier grocery applications like bulk bins or loaded shelving brackets, aluminum inserts are recommended.
What accessories work with slatwall panels?+
Slatwall accessories include hooks, baskets, faceouts, hangrails and brackets, shelf brackets, glass/acrylic/metal/wood shelves, and more. All standard MDF slatwall accessories are compatible regardless of whether your panel has 3" or 6" groove spacing.
Can slatwall panels be cut to size?+
Yes. Use a circular saw or table saw with a fine-toothed blade. Mark your cut line on painter's tape to prevent chipping. Panels can also be cut for electrical outlets using a jigsaw or keyhole saw — mark on painter's tape first.
Do you offer slatwall installation services?+
Yes — we install slatwall anywhere in the country. Call 1-800-292-5227 for a quote. Installation pricing depends on your location and the scope of work.
How is gondola shelving and slatwall delivered?+
All orders ship via freight. The carrier schedules a delivery appointment so you'll know exactly when to expect your order. Every shipment includes a free protective crate for damage prevention.
Do you ship nationwide?+
Yes — we ship to all 50 states and the Caribbean Islands. Freight delivery with a scheduled appointment is included on all orders.
Do you offer bulk discounts for large orders?+
Yes. Gondola shelving and slatwall panel orders both qualify for bulk pricing discounts. Fill out our bulk pricing form or call 1-800-292-5227 for a custom quote based on your store size and product needs.
What if my order arrives damaged?+
Photograph the damage and note it on the delivery receipt. Send us the photos and we'll handle everything — we file the freight claim and ship replacements at no charge to you. In the case of visible damage on delivery, you can also refuse the shipment and contact us immediately.
Will you beat a competitor's price?+
Yes. Call us with the competitor's name and price — we factor in the full cost including shipping and delivery and beat it. Call 1-800-292-5227 directly.
Can 4'×8' slatwall panels use a lift gate?+
No — 4'×8' panels must be manually offloaded one at a time by two people due to their size and weight (75–90 lbs each). 4'×4' panels CAN use a lift gate and are a good option if you're working with a smaller crew or tighter receiving dock.
How long does gondola shelving assembly take?+
Assembly typically takes 30–90 minutes per unit with two people, depending on the size and configuration. Choosing assembled delivery eliminates this step entirely — units arrive ready to place on your floor.
How long does slatwall installation take?+
Each 4'×8' sheet takes approximately 20–60 minutes to install depending on your wall surface and crew size. Use 2" self-tapping screws for wood or metal studs, 3" tapcons for concrete. Minimum 28 screws per sheet. Watch our installation video playlist above for a full walkthrough.
Should I remove aluminum inserts before installing slatwall?+
No — drill directly through the aluminum inserts. Removing them first is unnecessary and adds work. Use silver or chrome screw heads when installing panels with aluminum inserts for a clean, consistent finish.
Can gondola shelving be reconfigured after installation?+
Yes — shelves are fully adjustable and can be repositioned at any time. You can also change out the backing panels (pegboard or slatwall backing) or rearrange entire aisle runs. The modular system is designed for flexibility as your store evolves.
Is slatwall waterproof? Can I use it in a refrigerated section?+
Slatwall is MDF-based and not waterproof, but handles moderate humidity well under normal retail conditions. For areas with direct moisture exposure (produce sections, walk-in cooler surrounds), reach out to us and we can discuss the best options for your specific application.
Where can I find assembly videos?+
The slatwall installation video playlist is in the section directly above this FAQ. You can also find all of our how-to videos on the DISPLAYARAMA YouTube channel.
